MULTI-ENGINE REQUIREMENTS

If You Do Not Hold A Private Pilot Certificate:

​

  • You must be able to read, speak and understand English.

  • You must be 18 years of age.

  • You must receive Multi-Engine ground instruction.

  • You must hold a current medical certificate.

  • You must log a total of 40 hours flight time.

  • You must log 20 hours of instruction including

    • 3 hours of cross-country flight instruction in a multi-engine airplane, and

    • 3 hours of instrument flight instruction in a multi-engine airplane.

    • For night privileges you must have logged 3 hours of night flight instruction in a multi-engine airplane including one cross-country flight of over 100 NM total distance. Also includes 10 night takeoff and landings to a full stop.

  • You must have received 3 hours of flight instruction in preparation for the practical test within 60 days of taking the test.

  • You must have 10 hours of solo flight time including:

    • 5 hours of solo cross country flight; one cross country flight of at least 150 NM total distance with full stop landings at a minimum of three points, and one segment of the flight at least 50 NM between take off and landing locations.

    • You must complete 3 full stop takeoffs and landings at an airport with an operating control tower.

  • You must successfully complete a flight test.

 

 

If You Hold A Private Pilot Certificate:

  • You must be able to read, speak, and understand English.

  • You must be 18 years of age.

  • You must receive Multi-Engine Ground and Flight Instruction.

  • You must hold a current medical certificate.

  • You must successfully complete a flight test.

  • To add an “AMEL” or “Airplane Multi-Engine Land” rating to your Private Pilot License, there are no minimum flight requirements as far as hours. You must fly dual until you have perfected the required tasks for the checkride. For a complete listing of the specific checkride task requirements, you can purchase a Private Pilot PTS which includes both single and multi-engine Private Pilot checkride information. The below list encompasses the generalized list of required tasks:

 

  • (i) Preflight preparation;

  • (ii) Preflight procedures;

  • (iii) Airport and seaplane base operations;

  • (iv) Takeoffs, landings, and go-arounds;

  • (v) Performance maneuvers;

  • (vi) Ground reference maneuvers;

  • (vii) Navigation;

  • (viii) Slow flight and stalls;

  • (ix) Basic instrument maneuvers;

  • (x) Emergency operations;

  • (xi) Multiengine operations;

  • (xii) Night operations, except as provided in §61.110 of this part; and

  • (xiii) Postflight procedures.
